The educational version of Lego EV3 Mindstorms is unique in having a gyro compass and an ultrasonic range sensor. The retail version has instead an IR proximity sensor and an IR beacon.  Retail has some really impressive models; the retail humanoids use the LED-lit IR sensor where you would expect to see eyes, as does the snake.

I attempted to make a mech warrior out of the components of the education kit.  The laser sound and the mode changes of the color sensor make up the laser gun.  The red glow of the ultrasound 'eyes' adds to the effect of sensing distant objects.
